FACES

Faces is the eighth piece in the Street Tigers series, named to sit alongside earlier works like Eyes that focus on key features of the human body as seen in the modern world. This one is a personal take on "Faces of the City," pulling from fashion portraiture, street photography and advertising to build a portrait of expression across a crowded urban backdrop.

Three close-up faces, each caught in a different expression, are arranged in a triangle across the composition, a nod to the Mazda RX-7's rotary engine and its triangular rotor. The RX-7 itself appears twice, shown from the front and rear, cutting through the city between the faces.

The street level is built from contrasting slices of city life: salarymen smoking near a karaoke sign sit above a group of edgy young women, while at the bottom a crowd of onlookers crouch and lean in with phones and cameras to photograph the RX-7, a nod to the street-photography and car-culture influence behind the piece, capturing the car the way the piece itself is captured. Elsewhere, fashion-forward figures in styled outfits round out the cast, keeping the advertising and portraiture influence present throughout.
